I have spoken often of the longing God has placed within every human heart. It is the why behind every painful and constant ache for more. A longing that will not cease until we are with our Lord.

This summer I have found myself trying to fill that longing with… consumerism. I have become more and more apt to click the “Buy Now” option to rush through my purchase and chase that feeling of satisfaction I am craving, albeit a momentary one at that.

Buy now.

Those two words have become almost automatic, haven’t they?

We are so very quick to fill that longing with anything and everything. And I can feel it in my bones…the longing for more. The need for control. The feeling that if I just have that, I’ll feel better.

But I don’t feel better.

I only want more.

And more I have bought.

The package arrives. I open it. For a moment, I’m satisfied. Then another item catches my eye, another sale pops up, another “Buy Now” button appears. The longing never leaves because no purchase was ever meant to satisfy it.

Why is it that the gift of salvation sits before us with a price tag of FREE, yet we are often more compelled to spend our time and money on things we can purchase & buy now? Things that will never sustain us or truly fill us.

The way the world works is that you give something to get something. We give Amazon our credit card, and they send us our merchandise in return.

Maybe that’s why we are so hesitant to accept a gift that is free. We assume there must be a catch. That’s not the way the world works. Good things are earned. They are purchased.

But not this one.

Paul reminds us:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”— Romans 6:23

The gift of salvation is free to us because it was unimaginably costly to Jesus.

Jesus paid the price with His own life on the cross. And when He rose from the grave, He defeated sin and death once and for all. Because He paid the debt we never could, eternal life is offered to us as a FREE gift.

It’s not a trick.

It can’t be earned.

It can only be received.

Unconventional? Absolutely. But that’s our Jesus. He has done—and continues to do—what nobody else can.

So today, before you click “Buy Now” again, remember that the greatest gift you will ever receive is the only one you could never buy.
