Vast Beyond Measure

“He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name” — Psalm 147:4

What do you do when you reach the end of what you are able to understand?

The older I get, the faster I seem to reach the point where I am utterly confused, lacking understanding.

With the recent race into space and the safe launch and return of Orion, conversations in our home turned to how big our galaxy and universe really are. We started searching the distance of far-off planets and stars, and nearly all of them were measured in “light years.”

And there is where my understanding ends.

I have tried to understand the distance of a light year, but my little brain simply cannot comprehend such things. I quickly feel unequipped to process it. The pure vastness of our universe and all that exists within it is unfathomable—something I will never fully understand.

As I thought about those light years, I wondered how something so complex could even exist. And I was reminded of my smallness. My perspective was once again shifted by my mere, humble, human existence.

The same God who created a universe vast beyond comprehension…oh, that He would also perform acts far beyond our understanding. Oh, that the same God who created all the stars in the sky also created…me.

And for the greatest notion of all…oh, that the same God loves me. Pursues me. Wants me. And knows me by name.

On the days when your world seems too complicated to process, too exhausting to comprehend, rest. And remember—you were not called to understand everything. You were called to believe and to be loved.

Praise God that He does not require us to chase Him down or explain anything more than we are able. He meets us right where we are and loves us amidst our limited understanding.

Just as you cannot wrap your mind around the vastness of the universe, you are also unable to fully understand or even begin to measure the vast and infinite love of your Heavenly Father for you.

If God created galaxies we are yet to explore or even fathom, what might He still have to reveal in your own life—whether here on earth or in His eternal Kingdom?

Let the sky above, and all that it holds, humble you today—reminding you that there is more.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” — Isaiah 55:8–9

Reflection: Where in your life are you trying to understand what God is simply asking you to trust?
