The Seeker
“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” John 6:37
Some may have always wondered what John 3:16 was in reference to, having seen it printed on bumper stickers or spray-painted as graffiti on concrete structures.
John 3:16 is a verse that stands alone — quite literally. You’ll often see just the verse reference without the wording, implying that it carries such weight and significance that the text itself is not even needed.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
But do you know who Jesus spoke these words to?
It wasn’t on a mountaintop or to a large crowd. It was spoken in an intimate, one-on-one conversation, at night in a hidden place, between Jesus and a seeker named Nicodemus. As a respected religious leader, Nicodemus likely came at night because meeting with Jesus openly could have risked his reputation.
Nicodemus was not just a seeker — he was a Pharisee, a Jewish leader who prided himself not only on knowing Scripture but on upholding it. He was part of the important Jewish council that would eventually bring Jesus to trial and decide to crucify Him.
But God.
My favorite stories about Jesus are His one-on-one encounters because they reveal the intimacy and relational approach He took — and still takes — with every single one of us.
The world might tell you that Jesus runs a tight ship — that He came only to judge, or that He only came to save some. But that is not what Jesus Himself said.
His judgment rests on belief — on your “yes” or your “no.”
Look again at His words: God loved the world, and whoever believes will have eternal life. He didn’t list the hardest workers, the most knowledgeable scholars of Scripture, or even the most effective evangelists. He said whoever believes.
Do you believe?
Don’t let the world cloud the words that Jesus spoke so clearly to someone who was seeking the truth. Jesus is God with us — and God loves you and wants you.
Just as He met Nicodemus right where he was in his faith journey, He meets you.
The next time you see John 3:16, remember the gentle invitation to believe. The promise made and the God who made it.
My dear friend, if you hear nothing else, hear this: to get to Heaven, to see Jesus, you must only believe.
Reflection:What might be holding you back from saying “yes” to the invitation Jesus offered Nicodemus?
