Armor up!
2 Corinthians 11:3– “But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
There they stood—naked and unashamed. Hopeful without doubt. Trusting without hesitation.
Then the shadow fell. How? With one game-changing question: “Did God really say…?” (Genesis 3:1). And just like that, doubt stepped onto the stage.
There are several translations of Genesis 3:4, but the one that grips me most is the serpent’s reply: “You will not surely die.” That word—surely—exposes the enemy’s crafty, subtle nature. He knew it would be too obvious, too blunt, too risky to call God a liar. Instead, he planted doubt, twisting God’s words and nudging Eve to question His character. He didn’t outright deny God’s truth; he dismissed it, distorted it. And he still does the same today.
But praise God—we have been given armor to withstand the devil’s quiet yet persistent attacks. In Ephesians 6, Paul lays it out piece by piece. Today I want to focus on one weapon in particular: “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (v. 17). Unlike the other pieces of armor that defend and protect, the sword takes action. It is how we fight back against the schemes of the devil. And fight, we must.
Even Jesus Christ Himself wielded this weapon when He faced Satan in the wilderness. Each temptation was met with the steady refrain: “It is written…” If Jesus relied on Scripture, shouldn’t we? He was fully God, but He was also fully human. He faced temptation, weariness, and longing just as we do. Eve was tempted with subtle lies about God. Jesus was tempted the same way. And, friends, so are we. Every day the enemy whispers in our ear: “Did God really say…?”
But here is our hope: in the presence of God’s Word, the devil has no choice but to flee. He cannot stand against truth. So armor up, my friend. Fill your heart and mind with Scripture. Memorize verses you can draw upon in the heat of temptation. Your ways might seem fine, but God’s ways are perfect. If Jesus stood on Scripture, then so should we.
Thought question: What two or three verses could you commit to memory to fight the schemes of the enemy this week?
Prayer:
My Father, forgive me for how easily I fall for the enemy’s lies. Teach me to lean into Your truth and trust Your love. Pursue me when I wander and equip me with Your Word. I know that all Scripture is breathed out by You and is the only weapon I need. Let it be so. Amen.
