The “Thing” Is Never Really About The Thing

Proverbs 19:21 – “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

Since I have written my book I am often asked “how are sales” and “when is the next one coming?” I never mind it and am always happy to talk shop. But, since the release in May, it has come to my attention that the Book, the “thing”, was never really about the Book itself. How often does that seem to happen in life? How often do we forget that a sovereign God oversees all things and all things are for His glory, even if they are in a way of which we did not intend?

Sales are fun and recognition feels nice, but are those the will of my Father? Sometimes yes, but more often I see a still and small, more subtle ministry unfolding along the way—one that does not involve sales at all. Rather, it involves connection between two complete strangers over the phone.

From the original submission to the final website design, all of my Project Managers happen to have been men. So look at that happenstance—the female author of a devotional for women and an unfamiliar male, religious preference unknown, teaming together, sometimes for hours at a time, to hash out the why’s and the how’s behind faith. Each call was an unplanned sharing of a testimony and witness to how God has worked in my life. Some shared their faith with me, others shared their quiet hesitations. I am so grateful for what each one shared. Those conversations meant more to me than any successful week of sales ever could. Those conversations were full of grace and Jesus.

Along the way, in a fashion that I would have never fathomed, I was doing exactly what I intended with my Book. I was pointing hearts Home to Jesus in a way that did not condemn, but was approachable and loving. We know that all good things are from above, so while all credit goes to Jesus, I am in awe once again of His steadfast love and all-knowing Spirit that directs us to where and when His love is needed. So often our “thing” is not His. So often what we believe to be the true marker of success is just a stepping stone to His ultimate glory.

Where today might you be a stepping stone for someone? For Jesus? I am certain you have a task list that will take priority today. I do, too. Look at it and then look at it again. Could it be that those “things” are not the real things at all? Pray that God will use you today, in every conversation and every encounter, to reveal His Kingdom and His glory to those around you. No conversation or person is insignificant to the Creator. He uses all things and He wants to use you.

Our Father, help us to surrender this day to you. Where we have made plans for ourselves, reveal Your mighty purpose. Humble us. Use us. It’s all for Your glory today and always, Lord. Amen.
