Hold Nothing Back

Let’s jump into the Psalms today. For me, it’s an obvious place to land when I’m not sure where to turn when I open my Bible. David, the author of most of the book, is so very….human. He is so very….us.

To really value what David writes we have to understand from where he wrote. He was often on the run, experiencing persecution because of his unwavering faith. This Book, the Psalms, mirrors our lives as believers and followers of Christ.

It ain’t always easy, is it? In fact, it may often feel more difficult than it has ever felt easy.

The beauty of these Psalms is that the writers never held back. They brought everything to the feet of Jesus. One of the most desperate chapters is 88 where it states “For my soul is full of trouble and my life draws near the grave” (verse 3). How’s that for an authentic and most vulnerable cry for help?

Friend, do you hold back your deepest hurts from Jesus? Maybe you think He doesn’t want to hear it. Maybe you are afraid He can’t fix it. Maybe you are afraid you are not worthy of fixing.

Oh friend, I promise you that He listens, He wants to and He can. I can’t promise that He will do it just how you want, but I can promise you that His love will see through whatever does or does not happen. Jesus would rather hear your every feeling, your every cry, your every lament….as long as it involves you talking to Him. He. Just. Wants. You. As you are. Right now.

The first verse of the next Psalm following the despair in Chapter 88? “I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations” (Psalm 89:1).

Only a most perfect and loving God could take a heart full of such despair and give it hope. Friend, the same God sits with you today. Talk to Him and don’t hold back.
